In celebration of the Hampton Court Palace Flower Show, we’re making sure our gardens are good-to-go for Summer entertaining.
With Hampton Court Palace Flower Show in full swing, the wonderful displays have inspired us to get our own outside space ready to enjoy a Summer garden party. We recently hosted our very own Summer entertaining event at Eltham Palace – a beautiful 1930s palace with its own resplendent gardens – and asked the heritage site’s gardeners for their top 10 tips to make the most of any garden gathering.
- Get everyone involved
Gardening should be relaxing and fun, so get the family involved, the little ones will love planting and growing their very own blooms.
- Be fragrant
Grow a variety of scented plants, such as honeysuckle, tobacco plants and sweet rocket. These will be sure to not only make your garden look the part, but the amazing smells these plants create will really help to set the scene for your party.
- Eat your greens…
Grow your own soft herbs such as mint and chives to add to lettuce for flavoursome salads…
- …and drink your flowers
Once grown, freeze edible flowers (such as borage) in ice cubes to bring interest and colour to drinks.
- Add a citrus slice
Freezing slices of lemon, lime or other fruits will cut down on the amount of ice that might dilute your drinks.
- Multi-task with herbs
Use woody herbs from your garden, such as thyme, rosemary and bay, to create a mop brush to baste your BBQ food.
- Scent the air
The barbecue is not just for cooking on. After it has died down add herbs, which will subtly fragrance the air and help keep any insects at bay.
- Banish unwanted guests
To encourage a fly and wasp-free zone, place a brighter light some distance away from the main event to help attract insects away from the party.
- Be game
Have a selection of lawn games ready for your guests – it will ease the stress of entertaining. Why not place a selection of outdoor scatter cushions on the grass to make your guests more comfortable.
- Think about after-dark
For a little evening ambiance, plant white and pale coloured flowers that will glow in the twilight. String fairy lights for that added wow factor.
If you can’t make it to the Hampton Court Palace Flower Show this year, why not visit one of these other beautiful gardens across the country for some inspiration.
