A de-cluttered wardrobe is the key to discovering your own personal style. Shake off the January blues with our guide to a perfectly streamlined Winter wardrobe – in just four easy-to-follow steps.
- Cull your collection
A streamlined wardrobe starts with a considered clearout. Set aside an hour or so, lay all of your clothes out on the bed, and be brutal – if you haven’t worn it in the past year, it’s very likely you won’t want to again. The same principle applies to pyjamas, underwear, and shoes – discard anything faded, discoloured, or stained, and treat yourself to some gorgeous new pieces.

2. Organise and hang up
Hands up if your drawers are spilling over with layers of rarely worn clothes? Once you’ve established what you want to keep, create a simple organisation system, and stick to it. Hang up as much as you can at eye level – it makes deciding what to wear each morning so much easier. Organise drawers seasonally, by garment or colour, and consider neatly rolling – not folding – your clothes to maximise space.
3. White (and black, grey, and navy) always works
We may be biased, but there truly is a place in every wardrobe (and season) for white. It’s always prudent to buy a few classic white pieces – a tailored shirt, skinny jeans, a statement jacket – they’ll complement every colour and will always look fresh. Try to avoid ‘on-trend’ colours – those lime-green trousers more than likely won’t endure, but beautifully cut pieces in classic tones will. Consider your complexion, too: do you suit warm, neutral, or cooler shades?
4. Choose versatile pieces
When creating a capsule wardrobe, versatility is key. Look to effortless hero pieces that will work hard all-year round, such as coatigans, slim-cut trousers, and lightweight jersey shirts. It’s always worth investing a little more, if you can, in premium fabrics and beautiful cuts; they’ll last longer and wear better, especially if you’ll be wearing them week after week.
