With Summer rapidly approaching it’s time to make your outdoor space the place to be. Put in the work now and you’ll be able to sit back and enjoy those precious moments of sunshine throughout the hotter months. Whether you have a large country orchard or a bijou urban courtyard, these four outdoor living updates will make your garden feel like an open-air extension of your home. Just add sunshine.
1. Invest in lighting
There’s something rather magical about being able to stay outside in the garden on balmy nights after the sun goes down. Just like any other room in your house, lighting instantly adds after-dark atmosphere. We like to drape twinkly fairly lights from trees, or dot lanterns down the garden path and place them in the flower beds for instant ambience.
2. Create an area to lounge
Just because you’re outdoors, it doesn’t mean to you need to sacrifice on comfort. Create a cosy retreat that’s perfect for lazy afternoon naps by laying out scatter cushions or an outdoor mattress. With its drawstring bag and a large carry handle, the mattress is also perfect to roll up and take on your Summer wanderings, further afield. For the little ones, or those who prefer a little bit of shade, our tiipii hanging hammock creates a fun outside den, perfect for relaxing in the sun.
3. Plant a little herb garden
Planting herbs such as mint, parsley, rosemary and sage outdoors is a great way to convert the garden into an extension of the kitchen. With more meals outdoors, just snip herbs to garnish as you serve. Grown in a rustic planter, they make a rather pretty accessory or gift, too.
4. Choose smart furniture
One of the uncontested joys of Summer is getting to dine alfresco. The slim profile of these folding chairs and table is perfect for anyone with limited space, and makes it easy to store them when they’re not being used (on days when the great British Summer doesn’t quite live up to its name).
