If you’re one for adorning the house every Christmas, it’s crucial you have decoration storage down to a fine art. These time- and space-saving ideas for stowing tree lights, ornaments and more will make sure everything stays safe during the rest of the year (not to mention making it much easier when 1st December rolls around again).
Did you get a little carried away with beautiful wrapping paper this Christmas? Save it for next year by tying each roll up carefully with some ribbon, or a piece of string, and then placing it upright in a tall carrier, like our Kubu Multi-Purpose Basket. If you also have leftover greeting cards and tags, place these in a large labelled envelope and tuck them in the side of the basket. Store it in the back of your wardrobe and, come next year, you’ll be pleased you have one less thing to worry about.
If you haven’t kept the boxes your tree ornaments came in – or you’re just looking for a storage solution that saves more space – you’ve got a few options. Recycled empty egg containers make a great storage idea for smaller, delicate decorations. After you’ve whipped up your New Year’s Day scrambled eggs, simply fill each hollow with a little tissue for protection and place the decorations carefully in. If some decorations are simply too beautiful to bring out just once a year, place them in a large vase, along with fairy lights, to create an all-year-round display.
Avoid the dreaded tangle by recycling pieces of disposable cardboard. Cut a rectangle and then make slits into either side. Wrap the lights around it, making sure the wire tucks into the slots to keep everything in place. Alternatively, when you finish your roll of wrapping paper, keep the cardboard tube and wind the lights tightly around it. Et, voilà!
To protect fabric decorations, like table cloths, stockings and even the family’s Christmas pyjamas and jumpers, our best tip is to pack them all together safely into a cotton storage bag. It will make them easy to find, plus keep them safe from bugs, dust and dirt (pop some Cedar Moth Balls in, too, just to be on the safe side). Bags with a handy label window for you to detail the contents are great when it comes to finding everything again next year.
