With the hectic festive season well underway, finding moments of me time to relax and take stock is more crucial than ever. No stranger to a very busy schedule, comprising hours of strenuous rehearsals, performances and long-haul flights, we spoke to Lauren Cuthbertson – principal of The Royal Ballet and friend of The White Company – about her favourite ways to reset and unwind at Christmas and the rest of the year.
Find some ‘mind’ space
“I don’t get much time between my rehearsal and performance schedule, as I constantly travel, but I always manage to sneak some me time in. It keeps me sane, calm, positive and as alert as possible. A career as a ballerina is extremely taxing, mentally and physically, so most of my relaxation is centred on keeping my body in great condition as it’s my main tool.”
Wind down & relax
Following this, I like to cosy up in bed with some cool relaxing music, fresh white bed linen, comfy pyjamas, cashmere socks, a bedside candle and fresh-smelling flowers. I enjoy having a good book to turn to because, after flicking around on Netflix, checking my schedule for the following day and catching up with my friends on Whatsapp, I like to be quiet.”

Eat something simple
“After a long day of training and rehearsals, my muscles will be aching and my feet either burning or already numb. If I’m not performing or, going out that night, I take the Tube home as soon as possible so I can maximise my chill time. I’ll think about what to order for dinner or, if I’m feeling inspired, I’ll pop to the shops to grab some ingredients, always keeping it as simple and fresh as possible.
Pamper & reset
“If I’ve had a particularly tough performance, my relaxation process moves into the early hours of the morning. Relaxation is essential because I’m always back training the next day and I find it so difficult to come out of a post-show haze without treating and pampering myself along the way – the Spa range is fantastic for this to give me a much-needed mental boost as soon as I’m awake.”
