The Great British Summer has well and truly descended upon us. This year is rumoured to be a scorcher, which is wonderful news for our staycations and lunch breaks, but less so when it comes to uncomfortably warm nights. The heat can make us all feel too restless to slumber but, with these top tips, you and your little ones will sleep much better this Summer.
1. Wash away the day
Getting into bed when you feel hot and bothered makes it a challenge to feel comfortable. Always have a cool shower before bedtime to refresh your senses and notice how much more pleasant it feels to slip beneath your sheets.
2. Create a breeze
If the breeze from the window is not enough, add an electric fan to your bedroom. When it’s really muggy, create an air-con experience by placing frozen water bottles in front of your fan – this will instantly chill the air. Another easy trick is to hang freshly dampened towels around your room. As the water evaporates off them, it cleverly helps to cool the surrounding air.
3. Sleep on a cloud
To make your bed as comfortable as possible, opt for pure-linen bedding, which is blissfully breathable. For your little one’s bed, temporarily remove any waterproof mattress protectors, as they can make your child sweat when it’s too hot, and replace them with cotton protectors instead. For both you and them, check the labels of any bed linen and nightwear. Is it 100% linen or cotton? If not, switch to bedding and pyjamas that are. Both of these natural fibres are renowned for being wonderfully breathable and also help to wick away any moisture from the body quickly, meaning you’ll feel less hot and bothered.
4. Strip back the layers
When sleeping beneath a duvet feels too much, go continental and replace it with a cool linen or cotton flat sheet instead. For a luxury experience, opt for one of our Egyptian cotton sheets, they feel especially silky-soft and extremely light against the skin.
5. Keep refreshed through the night
If you or your little one are struggling to sleep through, we recommend running a fluffy cotton face cloth beneath a cold tap and dabbing it across your – or their – forehead. This trick magically cools, soothes and refreshes, so you should feel ready to drift back off to sleep again. Keep a cup of water near the bed, too, as it’s even more important to stay hydrated when it’s hot.
