We all know that a good night’s sleep is crucial to our overall wellbeing. Discover how to enhance the quality of your sleep as our founder Chrissie reveals her top tips.
LESSON 1: Start from the bottom up
“I’ve had a bad back for years, following a variety of accidents, and as a result my bed needs to support my body and back in all the right places – and that starts with the right mattress. Everyone is different, but it’s vital the spine is properly supported so it can remain in as neutral position as possible. If a mattress is too soft, it will put unnecessary strain on your back and muscles. If it is too hard, it won’t mould to support the contours of your body and you’ll wake feeling stiff. Our mattresses are made by the experts at Hypnos, a family run business with over 100 years of bed-making experience and a Royal Warrant from Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.”
LESSON 2: Find your comfort zone
“I am a great believer in investing as much as you can so that your bed feels as good as possible: supportive, comfortable and the right temperature – it makes such a difference to our quality of sleep. A mattress topper always makes your bed feel even better – it provides a luxurious layer of comfort for that ‘sleeping-on-a-cloud’ feeling. For me, sleeping between smooth, soft sheets is bliss; I believe it’s crucial to have pure cotton or linen – they are simply more breathable than anything synthetic. Sleep comfort is also about finding your perfect nightwear – different for everyone. I love crisp, cool cotton, soft cotton jersey and pure silk is heaven. If you feel the cold, bed socks are incredible – they magically raise the overall body temperature.”
LESSON 3: Always insist on quality
“Over the years, I’ve learnt a huge amount about how different bed-linen types are made and the best parts of the world to source them from. For example, there is fabulous cotton sheeting from Egypt, Portugal and Italy, and there is also poor cotton from these countries. It’s vital to have great relationships with expert suppliers – something we work hard at. I am widely known in the office for being obsessive about quality and detail. We don’t cut corners: from our superior percales, sateens and linens to our expert hand-stitching to our relentless enforcement of quality control, it’s imperative everything is finished well. Our goal is to provide the best quality for the price in the market and, crucially, last for many years to come.”
LESSON 4: Create a calm space
“I really believe in making your bedroom a sanctuary. It needs to feel calm from the moment you walk in. For me, that means being strict about being tidy and always making the bed! The bed is the room’s focal point, so at the end of a hectic day, it feels very relaxing to walk into a great-looking bedroom. However tired you are, always hang up clothes or put them in the laundry basket. Being tidy and organised really helps create calm. Make sure the room is the right temperature for you and open the windows daily to let in fresh air. Take time to plan the lighting so it can be adjusted for a wind-down feel. I love to add little extra touches, such as fresh flowers and a scented candle for a gentle flicker of candlelight while you recharge for the following day.”
LESSON 5: Have a wind-down routine
“Several years ago I was working very hard juggling the children with the business, and wasn’t sleeping well. I went to see a sleep doctor who taught me how to unwind – I now sleep extremely well! Here are some of the tips:
- Leave your busy day behind. Turn off your phone and any electronic devices an hour before attempting to sleep.
- Consciously work on your sleeping habits. For me, a relaxing hot bath for 15 minutes is perfect.
- Post-bath, trying to sleep straight away is a disaster. I take off make-up, change into nightwear, put out clothes for the next day, then read something non-work related for 20 minutes
- I keep a notebook by the bed, so if a whirring mind wakes me, I can safely note the thought, and then go back to sleep.”
