During busy periods, the stresses of our daily lives can easily seep into the evening, making it harder to turn off that power switch. Having spent 24 years committed to helping the country sleep better, our founder Chrissie Rucker knows how important it is to find balance. Read on and discover her secrets to winding down at the end of the day.
Create transition rituals
“When you get home, it’s so important to allow yourself some time to calm your mind after the day’s events. Crucially, do something non-work related. Why not try a little meditation – I’m a fan of the BREATHE app. Catching up with family around the dinner table is also a lovely way to shake the day off.” Chrissie Rucker OBE, founder
At the end of each day, it’s important to help your brain transition into rest mode. Build an association between certain activities and slowing down for the evening. Taking a shower, changing into your loungewear, having dinner with family, or using a meditation app (as prescribed by Chrissie), can all trigger a more relaxed state.
“Your bedroom should be a screen-free zone. Everything with a screen emits blue light, which prevents the brain producing the sleep hormone, melatonin. Aim to turn off your phone and any electronic devices at least an hour before attempting sleep.” Chrissie Rucker OBE, founder
When forever checking emails and endlessly scrolling through social media apps, it can feel like you’re tied to technology. Try mindfully disconnecting once a week and spending an evening screen-free to help restore some inner calm. Creating a cosy environment with throws will help you look forward to this time. Most importantly, avoid using your phone in bed to encourage a restful night’s sleep.
Reset your routine
“Consciously work on your sleeping habits, as having a pre-bedtime routine really makes a big difference. For me, a relaxing hot bath for 15 minutes is perfect. Post-bath, I read something non-work related for 20 minutes. Our body clocks benefit from getting in and out of bed at the same time every day; after a few nights, falling asleep and waking up will feel so much easier.” Chrissie Rucker OBE, founder
The best long-term fix is to work on your sleeping pattern. As Chrissie explains, there are multiple ways to do this, and it is important to find the right solution for you. Our specially designed Sleep Collection is blended with six of the most soothing essential oils – including lavender, chamomile and clary sage – to aid sleep.
