The smallest members of the family need the highest level of protection from the Summer sun. Home or away, daytime or night-time, here are our top tips for keeping the littlest members of your family cool and calm as the warmer weather arrives.
A timeless white nursery never goes out of style and will provide little ones with a soothing sanctuary for Summer months. Not only does it feel fabulously fresh, white will also create an atmosphere of calm on balmier days.
Perfect for lowering body temperature on a hot day, a cool bath should settle any wriggly babies showing signs of discomfort. Position the bath in a shady spot outside, and make sure the water temperature isn’t too cold. Let them dry while lying on a one of our hooded robes, helped by a cool breeze on their bare skin, then swaddle them in it before you bring them indoors.
For slightly older children or toddlers, swapping high-energy playtime activities for calmer pastimes will keep chances of overheating to a minimum. The warmer weather is the perfect time to nurture their creative side by encouraging them to sit still and draw. Rig up our new Easel Chalk Board in the garden and keep them entertained for hours – just make sure you add a sun hat.
Breathable cotton sun hats are essential for protecting little ones’ skin and regulating their temperature. To reduce the chances of poolside protests as they get older, we recommend getting your toddler used to hats from an early age. Great for Summer holidays, our reversible hats give the option of two adorable looks. Plus, they save on space when packing.
When planning their holiday wardrobe, stick to fluid silhouettes and natural fabrications. Floaty dresses or bodysuits will keep them comfortable on the balmiest of days. Investing in our breathable and light pure-cotton clothing will help little ones feel wonderfully cool.
Time spent seaside, or poolside, is great for keeping temperatures down and excitement levels up. Hit the beach early, as it is recommended infants should be kept out of direct sunlight as much as possible, especially when the sun is at its strongest between 11am and 3pm. Give the smallest members of your family the highest level of protection with our clever UV-protective swimwear.
During the night
Summer beds require a lighter approach, so, if they’re out of sleeping bags and into duvets, make sure you choose a lightweight option. Our Soft & Light Breathable range has a filling mixed with modal, which helps regulate temperature, and also keeps it beautifully plump and lightweight (it’s also great for allergies). Remove any waterproof under sheets from their beds as these will retain perspiration and increase body temperature.
We wouldn’t go to sleep all wrapped up during a heatwave, so neither should your little one. If the temperature is not forecast to drop below 25 degrees, it is best to dress them in a thin vest or bodysuit only. If the weather is not set to be quite that hot, a short-sleeved baby grow and a light 1-tog sleeping bag is the best option.
Just as you would in the daytime, stick to lightweight linen and breathable cotton. What you put on their bed is just as important as what goes on their body. All our bed linen is made from super-soft cotton to ensure a peaceful night’s sleep for everyone. Why not get little ones to select their favourite pattern or motif to match their PJs, so they feel like bedtime routines are still an adventure?
