From strawberry picking to movie nights, blogger Jess Soothill, AKA Mummy of Boy Girl Twins, takes us through her fail-safe activities to keep little ones busy over the long (and hopefully hot) Summer break.
As a blogger and mum of five-year-old boy and girl twins (Harry and Lottie, above), the Summer holidays can sometimes be a juggling act between work and play. However, I try to take as much time off work as possible to enjoy quality family time together.
Keeping them fully entertained for the whole break is not always easy, so I tend to create a bucket list of things to do – plus, it’s fun for children to tick each activity off.
So, here are some of the ways I will be keeping my little ones happy as we begin the Summer holidays:
1. Plenty of walks
We live in the countryside, so going for a walk is one of our favourite activities. It’s free to do, a great source of exercise, plus, the fresh air is good for us all. We especially love rambling through the cornfields at this time of year.
2. The beach
When the weather is nice, we like to go to the beach. My twins adore splashing in the water and building sandcastles together. The ice cream isn’t bad, either.
3. The park
The kids never say no to going to the park, and can’t wait to meet friends there for a play-date to ride their scooters. Why not make a day of it and take a picnic with you?
One of our favourite activities is baking cakes and cookies together at home. The children particularly like decorating their treats. The best part about baking? Eating what you’ve made.
5. Fruit picking
Fruit picking is an inexpensive (and fun) way to get some of your five-a-day into little ones’ diets, and my two especially love a homemade fruit smoothie. Our local farm offers plenty of fruit and veg to pick. What’s more, it encourages the children to get excited about growing their own produce back at home, too.
6. Movie night
It’s always such a treat to go to the cinema together and see the latest children’s movies. Likewise, we love being at home, making our own popcorn and cuddling together on the sofa (especially on a rainy afternoon) to watch a family favourite.
As members of a local health club, we love to be in the water at any opportunity. The twins like to show me their latest skills – from jumping in to swimming under water. We also use the outdoor pool, which is perfect for the current heatwave.
We do like to have a family holiday during the school break, either in the UK or abroad. It’s great to travel and make incredible memories on our family trips, switching off and just being together. This year we’re off to Majorca and we can’t wait.
Jess’ The Little White Company edit
We are huge fans of The White Company’s clothes, as they work for the whole family. These pieces are perfect for little ones and great for all the activities that Summer holidays entail.
