Cheese, chocolate, alcohol and a hectic social calendar – as we emerge out of the festive haze, is it any wonder that our skin is the first to feel the effects of a little overindulgence? If, like us, your complexion needs a new-year overhaul, follow our tips for getting your skin back to its pre-Christmas glory.
Sleep, sleep, sleep
They don’t call it beauty sleep for nothing, and there’s no better way to help your skin reclaim its glow than to evaluate the quantity and quality of your slumber.
Don’t be fooled: your pre-bed routine is just as important as when your head finally hits the pillow. Ditch digital screens at least an hour before you go to bed and establish a peaceful wind-down that will help your body and mind ready themselves for bedtime. Reading or a warm bath, with a splash of our Spa Relax Bath Oil, are great pre-sleep rituals (dotting some of our lavender Pulse Point on your wrists will help you unwind, too).
The new year is also a great time to think about changing your bedding. Pillows should be replaced every three years at the very least – they are breeding grounds for bacteria. If your skin is looking lacklustre or you’re struggling with spots, switching your pillowcase twice weekly could also help you on your way to a clearer complexion.
Eat your skin healthier
Get your skin back on track by feeding it the right nutrients. The body loves balance – one thing Christmas certainly isn’t. To combat this, swap your festive cake and cheese boards for nourishing foods, such as sweet potatoes, eggs, peppers, nuts and plenty of fruit and veg to support the turnover of healthy cells and collagen production.
Also, up your intake of essential fatty acids, like Omega 3s. They can be found in oily fish, such as salmon and mackerel, grass-fed meat, and chia and flax seeds.
Rehydrate (inside and out)
Indoor heating and outdoor chills, combined with too much alcohol and sugar, can leave your skin feeling dehydrated, so, it’s a good idea to invest in an intensive moisturiser at this time of year.
Keep an eye out for products that contain ingredients like hyaluronic acid, which has the ability to hold 1000 times its own weight in water. Our Skin Perfecting Moisturiser does just that, plus the Amazonian oils will have your skin glowing in no time at all.
It’s no myth H2O is key to achieving a perfect complexion. Up your intake by keeping a water bottle with you throughout the day (add a slice of lemon to make it more interesting) and replace your usual coffee with herbal teas, like peppermint and dandelion, which are well known for their skin-restorative properties.
It’s also wise to snack on water-dense fruits and vegetables, such as cucumber, watermelon and grapes, which all help your body better hold onto water.
Indulge in a facial
If you don’t have the time or money to go for a professional facial each month, treat yourself to a weekly massage at home. Simply invest in some good facial oil (we recommend our Night Oil) and take just five minutes in the evening for a little pamper time. This helps to stimulate the skin for a brighter and firmer appearance.
