Want to learn how to take great pictures when adventuring across the globe? Wherever you’re headed this Summer, return from your trip with a whole album of must-see images by taking on-board these top tips from professional photographer, Kristin Perers.
Q: What are your top tips for taking the perfect holiday photographs?
- Venture far and wide
“Ask yourself the question, what’s unique and local about where you are? Markets are a wonderful touchstone for local food, colour and culture, for example.”
- Play with the natural lighting
“Strong sunlight can be a blessing for your holiday but a curse for capturing portraits. To flatter your subjects, make the most of backlighting and slightly overexpose the shot.”
- Look a little closer
“Look out for unexpected subjects. Sometimes the edge of a door, a beautiful texture or a tropical leaf is all you need to tell the story perfectly.”
- Crop unexpectedly
“Negative space in a photograph is like a calm resting place for the eye.”
Q: How can you capture the moment, without spending your whole trip behind a camera lens?
“Keep it impromptu; remember it’s supposed to be a holiday! While smart phones are great for a quick snap, a small SLR camera is worth the investment if you’re serious about taking great shots.”
Q: What are some of your favourite ways to display your holiday photographs once back at home?
“I love the casualness and changeable quality of pin boards, the way you can layer pictures, seasons and moments together.”
Q: How do you make a collection of images work together when on display?
“If you’re using a multi-aperture frame, keep your pictures simple. Think lots of negative space, which prevents the images from fighting with each other, or choose a colour theme and intersperse some black and white images into the collection to create a point where your eyes can rest.”
Q: What’s your favourite holiday photograph, and why?
“It has to be a picture of my sons playing with a homemade water slide at their grandpa’s house. Sunlight, water, childhood and play sums up everything I cherish about family holidays!”
