With less chance of rain and puddles to ruin them, Spring is an ideal time to get your suede shoes out of storage and get them on your feet. But, a little care should still be taken to ensure they keep looking their best wear after wear – here’s how.
As soon as you take your suede shoes out of the box, give them a spritz with a protector spray. A light misting of sealant will last several months, and will repel dirt and stop stains. You buy protector spray online or at any good shoe shop.
If you spill liquid onto your suede, pat the area with a clean cloth and then apply a thin layer of talcum powder. Leave it overnight, and then brush the suede the next day with a suede brush to remove the dried powder. For dried stains, like dirt, use white vinegar. Blot the area with a clean towel dabbed in white vinegar until you see your stain disappear. This will also work well on water and salt stains. Never clean suede with water.
If you suede starts to look tired and flattened, a clean toothbrush will work wonders. Scrub the shoes with the toothbrush until the suede starts looking plush again. Holding your shoe above the steam of a boiled kettle and then brushing it will really help if the suede really has seen better days.
Once a year, or every 18 months depending on how much you wear your shoes, a professional clean will work wonders for getting them looking box fresh.
