Make bathing more than just an everyday routine this season with our Japanese-inspired guide to the perfect soak.
More than just an everyday ritual, bathing – when done correctly – offers a multitude of benefits for body and mind. Take inspiration from Japanese culture, where time in the tub is considered a meditative activity, designed to relax, renew, and reconnect with your inner self after a busy day. Here’s how to transform bath-time into a mindful ritual.
Step 1 – Set the mood
Before you begin to bathe, take a moment to decompress and prepare for a relaxing ritual. Pour a product rich in essential oils – like our Spa Restore Luxury Bath Oil – under hand-hot water, close your eyes, and let the sound of the running tap soothe your senses as the rejuvenating aroma fills the air. Try a complementary candle and keep the lights dimmed.
Step 2 – Cleanse
Start by gently but firmly cleansing skin, then follow with a thorough exfoliation – key in Winter, when central heating, frigid temperatures and bitter winds can wreak havoc on skin. Try dry body brushing for its circulation-boosting properties, or slather limbs in our pleasingly thick, Vitamin E-enriched Body Polish before rinsing clean.
Step 3 – Soak
Once your body has adjusted to the temperature, the relaxation can truly begin. Try and incorporate meditative breathing, focusing on simply staying present in the moment. Consider how your body feels in the water: do your muscles feel achy, your head tired, your feet heavy? Whether you soak for five minutes or 20, treat it as precious time to rediscover solitude (and simply ‘be’).
Step 4 – Take a moment
Yuagari – literally ‘the moment after the bath’ in Japanese – is considered as important as the bath itself. A time of luxurious tranquillity, take a moment to ground yourself as you step out onto a plush bath mat. Prepare a green tea beforehand and sip it slowly as you dry, allowing time for your body to cool down before you ease yourself back into the day.
