Out of all the phone calls to suppliers, endless emails about catering and chasing guests for RSVPs, wedding planning can take its toll. Luckily within all the ‘wedmin’, there are several fun wedding planning elements that are so exciting, it makes the other headaches totally worth it. Cake tasting, trying on dresses and hen-party planning are a few examples, but wedding registries are definitely at the top of the list.
So, what’s the best way to create a gift list and where do you start? After all, you want to make sure you get everything you would like, while keeping guests happy. Prezola, the UK’s favourite wedding-gift list, gave us their top tips for putting yours together.
1. Think about what you want
It can be a little overwhelming to choose from over 30,000 products, so sit down with your partner and talk about what you’d like as a present. Do you want to update your dinnerware or get the latest tech? Perhaps it’s time to refresh the garden, or add some new touches to your home. You might even want to create a new style for your home that suits you both as a couple, creating the space you’ve always wanted. Whatever the reason, make sure you’re both happy with the decision – you don’t want any sneaky additions that your partner doesn’t want.
2. Give your guests options
We recommend that you add one gift for every guest attending. So if you have 100 guests invited, that’s 100 gifts on your list! Although not everyone may buy a gift, others like to purchase more than one and guests are happiest when there’s a selection to choose from.
3. Consider various budgets
Your uncle might want to spend more than your ex-colleague, while your parents will probably want to splurge on something big as a treat. Prezola has gifts with all price ranges, so make sure you add something for everyone’s budget so there’s no pressure.
4. Give some time
It’s preferable to send out gift-list details with your wedding invites – or even your wedding website, if you’re having one – so make sure you have your list all set up before the invites are sent out. You can always start now and top it up with extra gifts at a later date if you’re not one-hundred-percent ready – just make sure it’s not left to the last minute to give guests lots of time to make purchases.
5. Think about the future
It’s completely fine to add the music system you’ve always wanted, along with that beautiful wall print for the bedroom. However, make sure you’ve also added some gifts that will be used for years to come. A serving dish brought out at special meals, a vase to hold all future bouquets from special occasions or a photo frame to display your wedding photos – all of these heirloom-style gifts will be the first to be snapped up by guests, too.
6. Treat yourself
Don’t worry too much about what you think you should add to your wedding registry, if you see something you love, add it on. If it reflects your style, guests will love to buy you something perfect for your personal taste. It’s not often you get a free shopping spree in life, so go for it and have some fun!
7. Don’t forget to say ‘thank you’
Guests have taken the time to consider the perfect gift to commemorate your marriage, so it’s only fair that you take the time to thank each guest for their generous present. It’ll mean a lot to your guests if you’re specific about the thank-you too, rather than a generic “thanks for the wedding present”.
