If you’re feeling overwhelmed by a busy schedule, it’s the little changes that can make all the difference. From desk yoga to arranging a beautiful bunch of flowers, start afresh this Summer with these easy mood-boosters.
In an increasingly frantic world, me-time can easily slip down your to-do list – ranking somewhere between clearing out the shed and re-ordering the wine rack in your weekly priorities.
Luckily, everyone has five minutes to spare over the course of a day; identifying where these free moments are is the first step to carving out time for mood-boosting tasks. The key is to start small: most of the ideas below can be done while simultaneously doing something more pressing (or even while sitting at your desk.)
Wake-up call: Start with a smoothie
Easy to prep the night before or on the day, kick start your morning with an energising smoothie. It couldn’t be easier – simply prepare your chosen ingredients (we like this delicious recipe from nutritional therapist, and one of our new brand ambassadors, Amelia Freer) and blend for on-the-go green goodness.
Mid-morning stress: Mindful breathing
‘Box’ breathing can be done anywhere, from your morning meeting to the school run, and is proven to alleviate stress. Simply inhale and count to four, then hold your breath for four seconds; as you breathe out, count to four again, and hold the exhale for another four seconds.
Afternoon slump: Desk yoga
Our lifestyles are now more sedentary than ever – hard to avoid if your 9-5 is desk-based. Even if you can’t attend a class, ‘desk yoga’ will boost your mood more than a 3pm chocolate or espresso fix. The key to avoiding strange looks from colleagues is to be stealthy, with yoga poses disguised as simple stretches. Here are three to try:
- Inhale deeply and lift your arms high above your head, clasping your hands with inverted palms, then lean to your left, repeating with a right stretch. Hold for five-eight seconds each side.
- Place your hand on the back of your chair, twist your body to the left, hold for eight seconds, breathing deeply, then switch sides.
- Bringing your left arm behind your back, place your right arm over your head and, if you can, touch palms or interlock your fingers for a lovely stretch. Repeat on the other side.
Pre-dinner treat: Fresh flowers
A fresh bunch of blooms on the kitchen table = an instant happiness hit. Try to make this a weekly ritual – it doesn’t have to be an expensive habit, either, with flowers for £1 (or less) readily available in most supermarkets.
Bedtime bliss: Facial massage
The benefits of facial massage are twofold: not only does it encourage blood flow to the surface of the skin for a glowing complexion, it also boosts the effectiveness of your skincare products – with minimal effort. We like to do this step with a cleanser that has plenty of slip, like our Super Balm. Simply massage in firm, upward strokes from the centre of your forehead out, repeating across your cheeks and jawline.
