This Summer, we’ve been inspired by the Mediterranean way of life: making the most of getting outdoors and enjoying quality time with friends and family. Here are some of the ways Chrissie will be embracing slow Summer living.
1. Loving a long lunch (and making it effortlessly stylish)
Summer is such a special time to spend with the family but, as our children are at school or university, getting us all together isn’t always easy – so it’s precious when we manage it. I love how the Mediterranean way of life has family and friends at its heart – and usually centres around long lunches and food! When it comes to entertaining, my mantra has always been ‘keep it simple,’ and Summer is the best time of year for this.
I’m also a firm believer in being ready before guests arrive, so I can then spend time with them, rather than rushing around sorting out complicated food. I love using great-looking sharing dishes and big bowls (two of my favorites this season include our oversized platter and bountiful bowl) and filling them with fresh, easy Summer salads. Here are some of my favourite people-pleasing recipes that feed a crowd.
Even the simplest of meals is transformed by taking a little time to make the table look special. Some flowers (I love using just one type of stem, and keeping it simple and loose), lovely glasses, a great tablecloth and napkins always make a big difference. You just can’t go wrong with a simple yet effortlessly stylish, white linen cloth – this one is my favourite. Alternatively, if you have a beautiful table, just the addition of some simple napkins will make it feel extra-special. I love elegant white ones, but I also adore these Summery stripes, which are perfect for a more relaxed feel.
2. Making a point of enjoying a lazy afternoon
The beauty of a Summer weekend is that we really do have more time on our side, thanks to longer hours of daylight. So why not make the most of having a siesta, or read that book you’ve been meaning to. Summer was made for siestas, and we think our fabulous double deck chair might just be the ultimate snoozing seat. I’m not sure I’ll be sharing it with anyone else, though! Or why not stretch out in the garden on a great picnic blanket (ours is waterproof), or on comfortable scatter cushions (these are perfect for making hard chairs or benches more comfortable, too). Remember, there’s no rush; take time to enjoy the longer days and, as the sun goes down, add an instant laid-back Summer atmosphere with magical candlelight. No matter the size of your outside space, it’s easy to create a warm glow by mixing different torch lanterns, crooks and tealight holders.
3. Sleeping more (and soundly in the heat)
At The White Company, we are obsessed about sleeping well and creating the most comfortable bed possible. In Summer, however, as the mercury rises, it’s time to make a few changes. Temperature in now proven to play a crucial role in the quality of our sleep (The British Sleep Council recommends bedrooms should be an optimum 16-18°C to sleep well), so in Summer it’s important to sleep in natural, breathable fabrics to stay cool and comfortable. Here are a few of my top tips for transforming our bedrooms into a Summer sleep sanctuary.
1. Closing your curtains during the day and opening windows really helps to keep bedrooms cooler in Summer.
2. Choose bedding made from pure, natural fabrics. All our exquisite linen, cotton and silk ranges are meticulously designed and sourced from the best factories in the world to feel amazing and last for years.
3. Switch to a Summer-weight duvet, or sleep with just a top sheet and a lovely pure-cotton bedspread.
4.Choose lovely, pure cotton nightwear.
