With warmer weather comes the challenge of re-making our beds to keep us cool and perfectly comfortable on balmy nights. The British Sleep Council recommends our bedrooms should be an optimum 16-18°C (60-65°F), which isn’t always easy in the height of Summer! I know I sleep far better when I’m not too hot, so here are my go-to changes for sleeping soundly this season.
1. Choose natural
Sleeping in bed linen that is warm-weather friendly makes all the difference and, in Summer, it’s really important to avoid anything with a synthetic content, if possible. Pure cotton, linen and silk are all naturally breathable fabrics that feel fantastic and help keep us feeling cooler.
Chrissie’s favourite Summer bed linens:
Santorini Linen, from £45
This all-time bestseller, made from pure linen, feels super-soft and brilliantly breathable. It’s iconic ladder-stitched border is detailed by hand, too.
Clarendon, from £68
This exquisite new linen and silk blend (both naturally temperature regulating) feels soft and smooth, yet wonderfully light against the skin.
2. Be tog savvy
It may sound like an extra chore, but changing our duvet in Summer is really worthwhile. Pack away any 13.5 or 9 tog options and switch to a blissfully lightweight 4.5 tog or lower. Silk duvets are beautifully breathable and a great choice in warm weather, as is our luxurious 4.5 tog Hungarian Goose Down Duvet, which was voted the number-one best duvet by The Independent in 2017.
3. Try light layers
I love top sheets all-year round, because they’re a great way to minimise constant laundering of cumbersome duvet covers. When the heat’s really on, top sheets are also fantastic paired with just a lovely lightweight bedspread. They are a great option for holiday homes, too.
Chrissie’s favourite Summer bedspread:
Vintage Etienne Bedspread, from £110
I always dress Summer beds with our beautiful, and much-loved, Vintage Etienne Bedspread – it’s so pretty with its tumbled-wash finish, and really lightweight, being pure cotton.
4. Top off your sleep
If like me, you love the blissful extra layer of comfort a topper brings, our luxury wool/cotton Reversible Mattress Topper is a fantastic choice for this time of year. In Summer, we sleep on it with the cooler cotton side up and, in Winter, we flip it over and sleep on the cosier, wool side up.
5. Wear cotton or linen nightwear
We love designing gorgeous sleepwear and, as with bed linen, avoid anything synthetic in Summer at all costs. Instead, choose super-soft, ultra breathable styles made from pure cotton or lovely, cool-to-the-touch pure linen. I always love a nightdress, and our new shorts and cami options are a fantastic choice, too.
Chrissie’s favourite Summer nightwear:
This nightie and the matching robe are the perfect duo for Summer – pure cotton is unbeatable for warmer nights. I adore the lightweight feel, loose shape and pretty embroidery – equally good for holiday or at home.
6. Wind down well
If you find drifting off to sleep difficult, having a pre-bedtime routine really makes a big difference. Relax in a lovely warm bath before bedtime (I love our Spa Relax Luxury Bath Oil with soothing peppermint, calming lavender and cooling clary sage). This helps to lower body temperature. Make your bedroom a no-phone zone and avoid any screens for at least an hour before you want to sleep – I am constantly amazed at the very real difference this makes. Once in bed, enjoy reading for a while (a book or magazine – essentially nothing work-related). For me, this always helps to unwind a busy mind and usually has me drifting off to sleep within 20 minutes, or so.
7. Room-temperature trick
Finally, keep your room as cool as you can. A simple but effective tip in Summer is to close our curtains during the day. It really works surprisingly well and helps keeps our bedrooms as cool as possible during warmer days and nights. It may sound obvious, but don’t forget to let your bedroom breathe by allowing fresh air in. Leaving windows slightly open during the night is a simple way to ensure the air flow is maintained.
